Buvoli's series Not-a-Superhero explores the construction of identity and attempts to derail the action-hero masculinity. Meta-Futurism tries
to disrupt the rhetoric of velocity and violence in totalitarian systems. Since 2010, thanks to the collaboration with NASA scientists, Buvoli has been working on Space Doubt, a disoriented and vertiginous reflection on science, modernist utopias, and geo-political fantasies. In this “expedition,” he travels from the optimism of Space Age exploration and the atomic anxiety and paranoia of the Cold War Era, to today’s environmental crisis. One of the 180 projects part of Space Doubt, the tragicomic series Astrodoubt and the Quarantine Chronicles, which includes the animated video A Brief History of Time (Under Covid) in 7 Lessons.
Buvoli has exhibited internationally for over 30 years, and institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Guggenheim Museum among other major museums have acquired his artworks, and his expanded multi-media projects – including animated films/videos
– have been presented at the Venice Biennale, the Johannesburg Biennale, PS1 MoMA, Seoul Museum of Art, Deutsche Guggenheim Museum in Berlin, and other shows and biennials in Asia and Europe. He had several museum solo shows including the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the M.I.T. List Center, Cambridge. Large-scale permanent public commissions are installed in New York, Houston, and Seattle.
Articles on his works have appeared in The New York Times, Art in America, Modern Painters, Art on Paper, Frieze, The New Yorker, Flash Art, and others. A Fulbright Fellow, he has received awards and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation, Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Program, New York State Council on the Arts, Creative Capital Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts.
Buvoli is the Director of a Master of Fine Arts program in multidisciplinary art at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, USA, and has given lectures on his artwork at Harvard University, Yale, Columbia, Brown, Bard, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, Shrishti Institute of Art, Design, and Technology in Bangalore, India, Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice, and many museums.
